Passion vs reality vs happiness

Hey guys it is Bill here.  I’m sharing a post with you all on something I have spent a lot of time thinking about.  Hope you enjoy it and please comment if you have anything to add.

I’ve never understood why some people (including myself at times) can’t come to a realization that we are who we are.  I say this with a great deal of hesitation, because I’m a firm believer we all are hypocrites, and not necessarily in a bad way.

For example, I feel in love with cycling at the young age of 20.  After a few months of spinning around the local hills, I signed up for the Davis Phinney cycling camp in Colorado.  A coach by the name of Skip Hamilton was there.  After a week with Skip, I asked him if he thought I had what it took to become a professional and earn enough money to put a roof over my head and food on the table.  He said no!  ”You have enough talent to become a good category 2 racer and Bill, never mind what other say, it’s all about your genetics.”  What did I do, I went and got some testing done to see what my genetics said.  Skip was right. Damn!  Right there and then, I came to the realization I am who I am, and I will be happy with that reality and continue to enjoy my passion for cycling but just not take it that seriously.

Over the years, I’ve seen men and women who continue to not come to that realization, and pass up countless opportunities, because they think they still can become the next World Champ. I do however admire the ones that get their education, decide on a career all while training for Olympic Gold.

I know this is a tough subject because we are brought up in a society that says you can do anything you set your mind to.  Well, this may be true for somethings, but not athletics.  Just like Skip said,  first comes genetics, and then comes all the other stuff.

I guess at the end of the day, we all have to balance our Passions, Reality, and Happiness.

Right now I am enjoying taking a bit of a break from cycling and competing locally  in running events.  It is a lot of fun and with no pressure from myself I am ending up doing pretty well and enjoying it.

Plus I get to spend more time with Kalli which is always a win-win!

Thanks for reading!

Run like you stole it

A few weeks ago Bill ran into the owner of Salt Sticks (Jonathan Toker) at the Xterra Malibu Creek race. Jonathan was very gracious, and sent Bill a bottle to try out.

Yesterday Bill raced the Pacific Coast Trail Race and he ended up doing very well!

I asked him if he would recap the race for us and tell us how he used the Salt Sticks.

The race was an 11 mile event and went down like this:

I don’t know about you, but when I run (race)  something overcomes me. It feels like people are after me, and I need to run as fast as possible. This is exactly what happened Saturday. I entered a 18k trail race with two major climbs in it, each 1,000 feet. Two miles into the race, I found myself barely hanging on to a young lad. Once we both hit the steep stuff, I noticed that he was having trouble. I don’t know about you, but when I smell weakness I go in for the kill. I decided that this will be where the race is won, so I redlined it all the way to the finish.  And I won :)

About the Salt Sticks!

I took a cap before bed and another one with my breakfast, and another 30 minutes into my race. All I can say is my pace was 6:09 per mile with 2,000 ft of climbing, not too bad. I highly recommend trying a bottle of Salt Sticks.

Did you do a race this weekend?
From all the instagram pics it seems like some of you might have!
I’m happy to report that after the race Bill put his legs up and had a beer.
Ha I think he earned it!
And thanks Jonathan for the Salt Sticks!

On again off again

Why is it that some weeks you feel like you are on FIRE and others you don’t?

Last week was one of those weeks that I felt unstopable when it came to my running and working out in general.

In fact, I ran four 7 mile runs in a row and then rode my bike 68 miles and then ran again 5 miles on Sunday.

This week-not so much.

It’s been tough and I have struggled with my mileage for 2 reasons:

  • my body has been talking to me and telling me slow down you are in pain
  • and I have not had as much motivation

So my week has looked like this so far:

  • Monday: off
  • Tuesday: 3 miles
  • Wednesday: 4.5 miles with hills
  • Thursday (today): 6 miles on the coast

  • Tomorrow I hope to run 7 miles and Saturday get in a good bike ride.

We shall see though I feel hopeful :)

Do you have on again off again weeks or is it just me?

Do you listen to your body when it is talking or do you ignore it?

Now that I am in my forties I realize I better listen or my aches will turn into injuries!

On another note, I won this book from Linda’s giveaway!

Super excited to read it this weekend.

What’s in your cycling jersey?

One of the things I took with me on my ride this Saturday were these gems.

Probar was kind enough to send Bill and I a nice box of the assorted flavors.

Bill and I consume a lot of energy bars.

Since we pack lunch and snacks 5 days out of the week, having bars on hand are a necessity.  Instead of digging into the work candy bowl or partaking in the donuts in the staff lounge, I tend to grab a bar.

My favorite so far has been the chocolate orange.

I like these fruition bars because they are not super calorie dense and they taste like real food.  Most bars lately are about 200 calories and have a lot of ingredients I can’t figure out.  Not these :)

On the ride on Saturday they were a quick pick me up and I felt better eating one than grabbing one of the cookies they had at our various stops on our route.

Though I did eat a cookie or two after the big ride :)

Have you tried these bars yet?

Check out their video too, it may make you want to try one!
