Passion vs reality vs happiness

Hey guys it is Bill here.  I’m sharing a post with you all on something I have spent a lot of time thinking about.  Hope you enjoy it and please comment if you have anything to add.

I’ve never understood why some people (including myself at times) can’t come to a realization that we are who we are.  I say this with a great deal of hesitation, because I’m a firm believer we all are hypocrites, and not necessarily in a bad way.

For example, I feel in love with cycling at the young age of 20.  After a few months of spinning around the local hills, I signed up for the Davis Phinney cycling camp in Colorado.  A coach by the name of Skip Hamilton was there.  After a week with Skip, I asked him if he thought I had what it took to become a professional and earn enough money to put a roof over my head and food on the table.  He said no!  ”You have enough talent to become a good category 2 racer and Bill, never mind what other say, it’s all about your genetics.”  What did I do, I went and got some testing done to see what my genetics said.  Skip was right. Damn!  Right there and then, I came to the realization I am who I am, and I will be happy with that reality and continue to enjoy my passion for cycling but just not take it that seriously.

Over the years, I’ve seen men and women who continue to not come to that realization, and pass up countless opportunities, because they think they still can become the next World Champ. I do however admire the ones that get their education, decide on a career all while training for Olympic Gold.

I know this is a tough subject because we are brought up in a society that says you can do anything you set your mind to.  Well, this may be true for somethings, but not athletics.  Just like Skip said,  first comes genetics, and then comes all the other stuff.

I guess at the end of the day, we all have to balance our Passions, Reality, and Happiness.

Right now I am enjoying taking a bit of a break from cycling and competing locally  in running events.  It is a lot of fun and with no pressure from myself I am ending up doing pretty well and enjoying it.

Plus I get to spend more time with Kalli which is always a win-win!

Thanks for reading!

Pics from the weekend

Oh weekend why must you go so fast?

She can make you hot

Bill and I do not watch much TV.  In fact, we don’t even have cable TV.  We started to feel like we were paying a rather large sum of money for very little TV watching.

So instead we subscribe to Netflix and Hulu and watch the shows we want with very little commercials.  We do not feel like we are missing much.  In fact, not having the TV on all the time creates a peaceful home environment and we don’t get wrapped up in the daily news programs either which helps keep my stress levels down as well. WIN WIN!

One of the TV shows that I do watch on Hulu though is The Real Desperate Housewives.  I like Orange County, Beverly Hills and New York.

One of my favorite characters on the New York show is Kelly Bensimon. Not only is she on the show, has children, looks fabulous, but she has a book coming out called, I Can Make You Hot.

Recently, Open Sky (one of my favorite shopping addictions) contacted me to interview her and I was THRILLED!

Here are some of my questions I asked her:

Kelly, how do you balance eating and socializing with keeping your trim physique?

The only way to balance eating and keeping trim is to dine. Enjoy your friendships, eat what you want, and when you are having a meal at your house switch the dinner plate for a salad plate.

When I watched the Real Housewives, they showed you running.  Do you run regularly?

I exercise 20 minutess everyday. I either run, bike, or use the elliptical, and ride horses when I have free time
What other exercise do you enjoy?

I enjoy doing whatever my kids are doing: bike riding, tennis. I love to be a part of their life.

How do you look so great and keep up being a single mom?

Since my children were born I’ve made a huge effort to take care of myself. If I don’t have energy to enjoy my kids then there is a problem. They are my legacy not my waistsize.
Did you enjoy being on the Real Housewives?  The other women seemed so mean!  Was that real?

I enjoyed the platform. With the exception of Jill and Luann, I’m not used to being around women who are so vindictive, and desperate for air time. It was strange. My real friends are so talented, generous, and have a tremendous amount of integrity

What is one thing that makes someone “hot”?

Integrity and self-respect makes someone hot.

I really enjoyed having this opportunity to interview Kelly.  She is so down to earth :)

I also enjoy following her on Open Sky.  She has some products that I love like this:

And of course her new book!

Have a great day………..

Do you watch any reality TV?

Cruisin the conejo

This weekend went by very fast in part because I spent a large part of it (Saturday) on my bike.

I joined up with my cycling friend, Marianna to participate in a metric century (68 miles) called Crusin the Conejo.

We started the ride at 8am on Saturday and completed it about 4 1/2 hours later.

It was not a race but it is called a supported bike ride.  For the 50 dollar entry fee you get food along the course and a post race party.  Plus they offer sag support (if you get a flat, or break down there are people around to help).

It was a really fun event and it was quite challenging as well with almost 4000 feet of climbing.  Plus the farthest I had ridden previous to Saturday was 50 miles so the last 18 were pretty rough!

But we finished!  And I felt like I had powered through a tough ride.

Thankfully once I was finished we had a fun night with friends scheduled so wine and delicious eats were enjoyed!

Did you have a good weekend?

So many people on instagram and on blogs ran races this weekend.  You got me to sign up for a half in June…..thanks for the motivation!
