New Ways

Some of you have asked me what my new way of eating looks like compared to my old way.  Well I will gladly show you “before and afters” ;)

But before I show you, I want to share with you my goals for this new eating plan.

  • First I want to cut way back on the amount of sugar, oils, wine, and nuts I am eating
  • Second I would like to trim up and lose a few pounds
  • Lastly, I would like to see if I gain more energy eating less processed foods and less starch.

So with that in mind………..

Before for breakfast I would eat a lovely bowl of steel-cut oats with lots of fixins.

Granted there is nothing wrong with oats. They are delicious especially with almond butter! Of course what is not good with almond butter?

Now for breakfast I eat a big apple, cut up and microwaved with cinnamon.

It was delicious and satisfying!

Today at lunch instead of eating leftover pasta or a veggie burger (like I used to) I made a bun less burger.

Started with some lettuce:

And piled on the veggies and leftover burger patty from last night with a side of mustard for dipping.  Before I would have used ketchup (LOVE ketchup!)

And for dinner tonight, instead of roasting a bunch of veggies in olive oil and topping them with hummus, I am going to make this:

I think it will be so good!

On a side note, today I drove Pepsi to the dog park.  It is only about 3 blocks away but she is getting so old that she can’t walk and then play-so we drove.

It was beautiful out.

In a few days she will be 13 years old.  I am thinking of getting her a Mc Donald’s burger and letting her eat the whole thing :) . I think she would like that.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and thanks for reading!

    Love the new style!

  2. Kelly says:

I am always the most hungry for breakfast. There is no way an apple with cinnamon would fill me up for longer than 30 minutes. Haha…but my appetite fades throughout the day. That could probably be my dinner and I would be fine.

  3. I love cinnamon apples – I have them in my oatmeal most days. But there is no way they would tide me over for long. Love that Pepsi still enjoys the dog park even if she can’t walk there, play, and walk home. I bet just being out there is so nice for her.

  4. Lori says:

I love the idea of getting Pepsi a burger for her birthday! Pamper the heck out them when they get older – that’s what I say!

  5. Kathleen says:

I’m sure pespi will love it I know my dog judd would!

  6. Zo says:

That’s sweet that you want to give Pepsi a treat.
I’ll be interested to see how your new way of eating works for you! I know I eat too much sugar and starches…but I have a hard time thinking about giving them up!

  7. Very interesting post, the apple breakfast probably wouldn’t cut it for me, but your lunch looks great!

  8. I think your ” before meals” described my usual eating patterns. I, too, am trying to eat less sugar. I think it’s always great to re-evaluate our diets and clean them up every so often.

  9. sounds good to me. I love the cinnamon and apple breakfast. I do that with peaches! Happy early bday to pepsi!

Hey there! I love the idea of revamping your diet but it sounds like you are tossing out all the good stuff like nuts, avocado, olive oil, and lite cheese. I don’t want to sound preachy as you know what works best for your body. However, clean eaters know that to lose body fat you need to eat good things in balanced combinations. Also, don’t give up on Ketchup just yet. There’s a reduced Sugar Ketchup that my clients all get to enjoy made by Heinz and the stats are as follows: 1 tbsp is 5calories, 1g Carb, 1g Sugar, and 170mg Sodium. Hope that helps!

  11. Oh wow, what a great gift, McDonald’s!! I’m sure she will love it :) I know I would ( I won’t lie, I love McDonald’s burgers, but of course I really never eat them).

I think your new eating goals sound very reasonable and realistic. I wish you luck. And, that dinner with the burger topped on all those greens looks JUST like the dinner my mom and I had last night. Seriously, just like it!

  12. Hi Kalli,
Do you really want my honest comments on your breakfast and meals?
As you know, having had a history of a few medical problems, like lupus and
rheumatic heart disease since age 13, I learned soooo much about the importance
of natural nutritious diet. Weight was never my problem. Age 30, I realized that if I would like to live longer, I better study proper nutrition, the natural way, not what the
dietitians of this day preach. Not by drugs which most traditional medicine would
prescribe. I am now much better and more agile in the past 18 years!!! Blood work
    all normal.

Yes, ketchup has refined sugar, cheaper! Buns are processed refined flour. Steel cut oats are still good for you when you do not put a lot of those fixings. A small amount of
stevia or agave will suffice to sweeten it. Whole grain flour would be better.
McDonald has not yet come to the realization that buns are processed flour.
It is cheaper! This is the issue. Yes, any thing processed is not what our body needs.
The human body is the most sophisticated machine ever created.
It needs to process the food for us. If we feed it with processed food, it is not
doing what it is supposed to do. Hence, stagnant! You get hungry more often.
And by really chewing our food before swallowing, this would help most people
    not to eat too much.
Olive oil and grape seed oil are not the enemy. Sunflower and canola can be.
I will send you an article that may add to more information about sugar and
    fat.
    Talk to you soon!

  13. Beth says:

I would die if I just ate an apple for breakfast!!! I could start breakfast with an apple, but then it would be very necessary to have some protein!

  14. Lucky, lucky Pepsi!!!! Awww. Have a great day Kalli!

  15. eatingRD says:

Always good to change it up a bit and go for fresh! I love wine, but always feel better when I abstain darn it! What a beautiful day to go to the park.

  16. Cindy says:

    I Love all your changes.

I thought you ate awesome before but I hear ya!!!

We used to grab our puppers a burger and take away the bun (it didn’t agree with her let’s just say)
she used to get so excited.

    almost happy bday to Pepsi!!!

  17. Lauren says:

I’m cracking up because your diet is getting cleaner and the dog is getting McDonalds/totally fine everyone deserves a treat. Just an idea, lots of people have commented on the apple breakfast. You could use those cinnamon apples in a smoothie with a little protein. Or, if you eat dairy a dollop of plain yogurt. I am a fan of a bit of protein in the AM but it seems as though your changes are working, can’t wait to hear more. There was a sugar article in the NY times that made me reconsider even my “healthy” sugar in my diet.

  18. Allison says:

    Hi Kalli,
I meant to respond earlier to your comment on my blog, too, but as you know, this was a busy week at school! Thanks for your nice words about the running; I’m proud of myself too for that 10k time!

Just wanted to add my .2 into the mix on this food conversation by sharing some links with you. I noticed that you seem to shy away from fats, but in all my research on diet lately I’ve been hearing more and more that dietary fat (especially saturated) does not contribute to body fat. In fact, it’s carbohydrates that do. So, feel free to have some butter on that apple :) I just found out that the Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter that Trader Joe’s sells is grass fed from healthy cows, and I’m way excited now because I eat a lot of it!

    Amazing book on the subject:
The Vegetarian Myth by Lierre Kieth
