So with all my problems with my hip and back, I have resorted to learning how to run differently, use a foam roller, and try new shoes (more on the new shoes later).
Some things I have been doing lately, Khrystle has shown me and others I have learned from the book Chi Running.
A few things I have learned is:
- Run with Joy
In fact, run like you did when you were a child. - Lead with your heart. Run slightly leaning forward and lead with your breastbone
- Set an intention for your run. Don’t just run to run……think about what you want to get from the run and finish with that in mind.
- Run on the balls of your feet
- And lastly, SMILE!
I love it.
It reminds me of yoga.
I can get into this

Oh yes, smile – that’s so true. There’s just something about smiling when you run that makes you feel even better. I typically run on a river trail route where there are lots of other people. I try to smile at everyone I pass and wave to them. Silly probably, but it makes it less painful when you start to get to that exhaustion point.
Have you tried barefoot running?
Hmm…I don’t have the book but was trying some of those methods (told to me by my physical therapist). I still had some issues.
In Hawaii, I noticed that I did some “running” in the hotel from one end to the other (racing the train), in my flip flops. So. Running on the balls of my feet. And I didn’t have a single bit of pain in my hip or knee. In any kind of running shoe, only one minute will cause me to ache later.
So, I’m considering trying barefoot running. If that doesn’t work, maybe try the orthotics my doc recommended.
I love that about running like a child – don’t kids run everywhere?!
Smiling while running, that would be hard for me, running is hard for me.
i love how they focus on the purpose of running. Such great advice. Helps to overcome burnout!
OH how I love this book.
I should re-read it. I forgot about the balls of your feet tip.
new shoes????
so what is the foam roller for?
I love this. Sounds like it makes running seriously fun! (seriously fun – that is quite the oxymoron isn’t it??) Have a great day Kalli.
I LOVE THIS! I love the “Smile” and “run like a child” advice! How many times do you see a runner pass you and their smile is just contagious! I wave to everyone running and it seriously brings pep to my step! I have got to get this one!
