First Steps Back

Today I finally laced up my old running shoes:

Why hello shoes!  Long time no see…….

And put on my favorite running capris:

And ran for 15 minutes down to the beach and back.

It felt slow, it felt a bit awkward, but I was running!  And without pain :)

You see back in the fall, my hip started getting super tight right after a fast 5K race.

Then my back started really hurting and I had nerve pains going down my leg.

I got acupuncture and I rested (and cried).

I felt defeated.

Finally the pain went away and I was happy.

And I forgot about running because I did not want that pain again.

But lately I have been looking at Runners World Magazine and thinking about running.

So today I took the first steps back and ran and I ordered a foam roller for my hip ;)

Have you ever been laid up from an injury?

Thankfully I haven’t…I’ve had a few minor strains that made me take a few days off, but even those freaked me out, so what you describe sounds awful.
I’m glad you were able to run successfully and hope it continues to go smoothly (and that you’ll take it easy!)

  2. what a great first step! I hope it only gets better from here!

Yes yes yes…I still am. I still have that same hip pain and shooting sciatica pain. I finally went to the doctor about the knee (already went about the hip), and he recommended the hated foam roller, a knee brace, orthotics, and strengthening exercises. If I insist on running. But he suggested maybe I don’t because I pronate like crazy.

    We’ll see.

  4. Yay, how exciting! I suffer from migraines so I have to be really careful about my exercise. When I’m feeling good, there’s nothing like a good run to get the endorphins going. Keep up the good work! P.S. Your kitchen is gorgeous.

YES! laid up many times…. its frustrating for sure….. but when I am getting back into running after injury or illness I try to keep focused on the joy of running, for the solitude and quietness it brings :) . Feeling sluggish, and out of shape on a run is good… it motivates me to keep going cause I know it wont last forever and before long i will be running strong again.
Good job getting back at it! woooowhooo!

  6. I’ve had hip issues too, but using that triggerpoint kit has really helped tremendously. Not only do I no longer have IT band pain, but it helps loosen up the low back. It’s crazy how all the muscles are connected so rolling one spot helps a totally different area. I must say, wee bit jealous that you get to run near or on the beach ;-)

  7. Yeah for you! Your body and mind was ready!

Sadly, I’ve had several injuries and have learned a lot from them. Your body needs to recover well to perform well.

Your post brought a smile to my face. I’m in Florida for the weekend and felt the call to run today. I had convinced I lost my running mojo but I think I was just fed up with the NY winter. Today, sun shining, windows open in sunny Florida and I want to MOVE. So I do still want to run. YAY!

Take it nice and easy as you re-enter running. Your body will thank you for it!

I fully understand, not there at the moment but have been there!

you know my saga of ongoing hip/si issues. it’s frustrating and defeating but i keep pushing through hoping for that day i can run pain free again. i do need to use my foam roller more and maybe (though i hate to admit this) take some time down again. but without my run i feel as though a part of me is missing.

welcome back. i hope you stay pain free!

How funny, today was my first day lacing up the (probably too old) sneakers too.
It felt good, creaky but good. I’m glad I found your blog. Feel good!

Good for you for getting back out there! I’m loving this recent change in weather and can’t WAIT to go out for a run in the morning!

  12. Glad you’re getting back into running and enjoying it! For the hip pain, take a look at the souls of your current running shoes – if they’re wearing more on one side, they might not be great for your pronation. My last shoes weren’t and caused hip pain after my first half marathon. My current ASICS are great with more heel padding for my pronation type.

When I first got into mountain biking, I wiped out and put a hairline fracture in my arm. That was a frustrating 6 weeks to take off from biking!

YAY!!! Way to go Kalli!!! Glad you are back “on the run”. I’ve got a foot injury now, so am having to be VERY careful about what activities I can do. However, in the big scheme of things, it’s not that big. I try to remember that when I feel blue about it! Have a great day.

    Kalli –
I am laid up – right now! A back injury – possibly a herniated disc. I’m off to physical therapy. So glad I read your post today. Being fit after 40 isn’t always easy, is it?

  15. congrats on your return to running!
oh yes, i’ve had to take time off from running soooo many times. anywhere from a couple of days to many months. doesn’t matter the length of lay off – running injuries suck!
i’m hoping that as i get older, i am training more wisely!
    have a great weekend!

Yay! I’ve had little injuries here and there but nothing too serious, or at least I eased off before they got too serious. I’d like to try running again but when I got up around 6mi my hip started talking to me. LOVE your new kitchen by the way :)

  17. Natalie says:

I had a stress fracture in my foot that ended up turning into a full break. I am just now back to higher mileage (14 months later) and had to take about 4 months off. I’ve realized that my body is not made to run more than two days per week…and that’s cool with me. I like doing other things too!

  18. greensandjeans says:

Wayyyyy too many times. I’m currently hobbling around in my boot and I can’t wait to get back into my running shoes!
