Bill’s Bulgar

Last night while I was “playing” on the computer, Bill was making dinner.

He prepped the salmon before putting in the oven:

And made the best bulgur dish I have had to date.  Unfortunately, he is keeping it a secret even from me.  But I am guessing there were many spices involved and some olive oil.

Here is my dinner plate with some lemon hummus on top of my salmon:

It was a delicious meal!  I am really loving my new grains-bulgur and barley lately.  I also feel good that I am eating them instead of pasta all the time.

What healthier thing have you swapped out lately?

Also, what other grains should I try?

Remember last Friday when I was too tired to meet up with Khrystle for a Tabata Ropes workout?  Well today we are meeting up to do it :)   I am very excited because it sounds so different and I hear it is quite difficult.

I will let you know how it goes!

Have a great Tuesday-day two of testing for me…….

xoxo

Looks great! My swap is quiona for rice. I need to swap more but it is hard to find any other whole grain. It is so frustrating, I would die to have them build something like a whole foods market.

  2. One of my recent healthy swaps is to put my usual protein powders on hold and use Vega instead – which is probably a gazillion (very scientific term, I know) times more loaded with nutrients than bog standard protein powders.

  3. I guess I didn’t really make a swap, but I got rid of diet soda a few months ago and since then, even an occassional soda just tastes gross. I’m proud of myself! :)

  4. Michelle says:

I swapped greek yogurt for mayonnaise in my tuna salad a couple of days ago. I don’t even miss a thing!

  5. What?!?! He won’t even tell you? Is he afraid you’ll share it with all of the blogging world??? (which i would totally want you to do) ;)

I’ve been slowly swapping out my coffee with tea at work. I’m almost positive this is the reason I was in such an awful mood last week at work, but it’s starting to get easier…

  6. Kelly says:

    Bulgur is so good…love!

  7. Can’t wait to hear about the ropes workout. Sounds very intriguing! Have you tried wheat berries yet?

  8. Your dinner looks wonderful! I love salmon, and have not had it for a long time. What does Bill spice the salmon with?

Mmmm Bulgar is great and hearty! I wonder if he will ever tell you his secret?

    Do you like quinoa?

    XXOO

  9. cher says:

that looks amazing. mostly the bulgar…..i’m intrigued now as to how it got that texture. it almost looks like a very good comfort food, which i’m enamored with comfort food of ANY sort.

  10. I’m really curious to hear about your ropes workout!

  11. Ashlei says:

Oooh try millet! It has a great buttery taste and I love it! You always have such amazing looking food – fish especially! – on here :)

  12. Beth says:

I just bought some Quinoa Pasta that I’m excited to try! Gluten free, has 4grams of protein, and 4 grams of dietary fiber in each serving.

have you had quinoa before? That’s a grain I would definitely recommend!

  13. Matt says:

I have been trying to eat more vegetables as my side dishes instead of bread of pasta. I actually really like it this way :)

Have you tried millet? Or buckwheat? Both are awesome!

  14. Lemon hummus on salmon! YUMM! I tried spaghetti squash instead of pasta recently, and it was pretty tasty :-)

  15. Omg you know…I loveeee Barley and haven’t had it in soooo long! I think I may have to pick someup! I don’t think I’ve ever had Bulgar….lately I’ve been making Quinoa!

  16. applec says:

There are different Quinoa’s you could try. Also different types of barley.
I stick to rice and oatmeal. How boring!

  17. Amaranth. It’s a great source of protein!

Also try sprouting any of your grains for additional benefits:

  18. Lindsay says:

I’ve been swapping out packaged snacks for fresh veggies and fruits. I’m only on the third day and I swear I feel better. Now if I can just keep it up!

  19. Dani says:

I’ve been spreading a little Laughing Cow wedge as a condiment on my bun with a veggie burger. Way better than mayo!

  20. Judi says:

I like barley, but overall I think I prefer legumes over grains. I like brown rice but unfortunately I prefer the “white” varieties over the brown. I just love the taste of white jasmine rice! Brown jasmine is just not quite the same. I have both on hand and use what I am in the mood for at the time! :) It isn’t easy to be good all of the time! I do like wheat berries. Have you ever soaked them and had them in a salad – very tasty!

    Love, love salmon!!!

  21. That bulgar looks nice and sticky, how do you get it that way?
I have been swapping out bars made with more natural ingredients for cheaper over processed ones.

  22. Tracey says:

I really like barley! It is so filling and goes well with lots of different dishes.

Salmon is something that I wish I liked. It is so good for me but I just can’t bring myself to eat it:(

  23. Nicole says:

Ah, I know I would have two protein smoothies a day just to have Bill’s Pizzas. I love a really good pizza. Unfortuntely, I haven’t found a place that has exceptional pizza!! Can’t wait to hear about your workout!! Have a beautiful day.

  24. Nicole says:

Kalli, By the way, what grade do you teach? I have a son in 6th grade and I was just wondering. We just got done testing last week.

  25. I am always looking for new grains to try too. Some new ones I have tried are quinoa and barely. I have wheatberries in my cabinet that I need to try too. bulgar is on my list to buy!

  26. I’ve been so bad about swapping new/healthy things since I’m trying to clean out the fridge/pantry!

    salmon looks AMAZING!

  27. Lately I’ve been swapping cashews for hemp seeds in raw recipes for more protein, less fat. I just tried bulgar for the first time an Whole Foods today, it was great!

  28. Omg..that dinner looks so good. Never thought to put hummus on my fish before. I want the barley recipe!!!

  29. actorsdiet says:

have you tried amaranth? it’s pretty tiny but it’s good!
