Alkaline vs. Acidic

I have been hearing a lot of information lately about the benefits of eating an alkaline diet versus acidic diet.

Apparently cancer cells thrive in acidic environments as other diseases do too.  By eating certain foods, you can increase the alkalinity in your body and decrease the acidity.

I was first introduced to this idea while reading the book, Thrive.  In fact, I switched a few things up in my diet because of his research.  I switched from whey protein to hemp protein.  I introduced coconut oil into my diet along with my staple of olive oil.  And I have played around with making my own energy bars and soon will try to make my own “gels.”

I have also introduced “green”  food supplements such as amazing grass into my diet on a daily basis.

Most vegetables produce an alkaline environment while most processed foods  and meats create an acidic environment in our bodies.

I would like to further research whether our vitamins are working against the alkalinity in our diets as well.

What do you think?

I am off to walk Pepsi and either ride my bike or get out for a run.  It has finally stopped raining!

  1. I have been reading ALOT about this topic lately also! I find it fascinating. I tend to be a bit sensitive to the subject of cancer because there has been alot of it in my family so anything I can do to prevent it, I’m on board!

I watched a documentary that was about the Gersen Therapy, Dr Max Gersen first touched on this idea years ago but because there is so much money to be made by using pharmaceuticals it is almost never heard of… I have been trying to find one of his books for a while now (library, Barnes & Noble) with no luck…. I may have to break down and buy one on Amazon.

It was this ‘alkaline vs acidic’ theory that got me started on juicing. I have a tall glass of juice every morning on an empty stomach to try and alkalize my body.

Sorry to go on and on…. it’s just so fascinating to me! It’s looking to be a beautiful day here in Socal!! Enjoy!!

Not one to endorse fad diets and the latest bestselling diet books, this one for me makes sense because it encourages more vegetables (alkaline) and discourages meat and saturated fats (acidic).

Moderation and foods that are dense in nutrition will be better choices than mindless consumption of ready-made convenience foods or fast food restaurant choices consisting mainly of beef, chicken, fats, and starches.

  3. The alkaline vs. acidic approach to food is new to me. This is the first place I’ve ever seen it mentioned. I have been hearing alot about the merits of coconut oil though. I will have to check out Thrive.

I fully believe in the alkaline vs acidic approach. A few years back I had a consistent case of heart burn. I was working a very stressful job and eating unhealthy and ended up going to the doctor because my heartburn wouldn’t go away. The doctor prescribed a 2 week acid-reducer pill – I forget what it’s called now. But I took it and felt worse. It made me dehydrated and nauseated.

I started reading about heart burn and acidity and instead of taking the meds, I changed my diet. I printed out all the alkaline charts I could find and for 3 weeks ate ONLY alkaline food. It changed my whole body. I felt energetic. I had no more stomach problems. The heartburn and acid reflux disappeared.

If you look at the food on the charts, it just makes sense – like Mark said. Now I lean toward a more alkaline diet and really feel it when I stray.

  5. I did a search for Thrive on your blog because I just started reading it. I haven’t tried coconut oil yet because i have not found it yet. Did you try making your own gels in the long run? (no pun intended.) My younger daughter keeps hearing me quote stuff about nutrition and says I read too much!
